Opera Gallery Dubai is proud to present a country-driven exhibition titled “Korean Art – A Contemporary Take on Texture”.
Through a significant, curated selection of recent works by nineteen artists who The Gallery supports, Opera Gallery Dubai is delighted to present a panoramic representation of regional craft, with a highlight on texture and each artist’s relationship with uncanny mediums.
The exhibition covers trends ranging from traditional Korean art up to the Dansaekhwa Movement of the 1970s, or the Minjung Misol from the 1980s onwards. The artists that Opera Gallery Dubai invites you to discover, or rediscover, forge their work from an extremely subtle cultural legacy, which much like the region, sits in a constant state of flux between tradition and innovation. Whether using classical materials like oil paint, ink, ‘Hanji’ paper made from the Korean mulberry tree, or less expected industrial materials like cycle chains, steel nails, polycarbonate or copper piping, these creations are generally marked by a calm sense of minimalist clarity.
Each of the nineteen Korean artists included in the exhibition, including Bahk Seon Ghi, Yoo Bong-Sang, Cho Sung-Hee and Lee Jae Hyo attempts to reference complex issues surrounding society’s evolution in a nurturing space within nature, which has been jeopardized by industrialization, the impact of the digital era or the ethical limits of major scientific and medical progress in the 21st century. The lucidity, dynamism and anti- conformism that emerge from these creations, and in turn this exhibition, enhance the pertinent, wider universal themes of the international world of contemporary art.
This exhibition perfectly ties in with The Gallery’s constant efforts to promote contemporary art through public activations. Passersby and collectors from the region have recently been introduced to Korean art via a temporary exhibition located in the new Gate Avenue of the DIFC, which Opera Gallery Dubai hopes acted as a catalyst to spur interest towards the more intimate gallery show in March.
The Gallery has maintained a presence in the ‘Land of Morning Calm’ since 2007, with its prime showcase in the Gangnam district of Seoul, positioned at the beating heart of local creativity.
Opera Gallery Dubai looks forward to hosting guests during the art-filled month of March and discovering the talented Korean artists on display for this first of a kind exhibition. The exhibition opening will be held on Wednesday, March 13th and will run until the 28th March 2019.
