THE FINAL STRAW!
The Noodle House stands alongside Freedom Pizza on the war against global marine pollution with a brand-wide ban on plastic straws and cutlery
Dubai, UAE – 21 February 2018: With growing public concern over the impact of plastic waste on marine life, The Noodle House, the UAE’s favourite homegrown food and beverage concept, is the latest F&B brand to weigh into the plastic pollution issue by removing plastic straws across its entire operation of physical restaurant outlets and home delivery services as of Sunday 25th February.
Standing in union with Freedom Pizza, which just this week announced the removal of all plastic straws and cutlery packs from its delivery operation, a nationwide #stopsucking campaign is challenging all Dubai delivery firms to follow suit by calling time on unnecessary plastic. As one of the region’s first restaurant brands to commit to tackling the wasteful practice of serving a straw with every drink sold, The Noodle House has been pioneering the ‘final straw’ exercise across its two rebranded Dubai outlets in Souk Madinat Jumeirah and Burjuman since last September. However, as the ‘Freedom movement’ picks up pace, so does The Noodle House’s commitment to becoming entirely plastic-free across its entire portfolio of restaurants for 2018.
Instead, The Noodle House is offering paper straws on request, a move the legacy food concept claims will stop 380,000 straws entering landfill sites or making their way into the ocean each year. Following this lead, plastic cutlery has also been removed from all of its home deliveries to further reduce damage to the environment.
With the average plastic straw taking 500 years to decompose, much of the concern around throwaway plastic centres on the devastating impact it has on the world’s oceans and marine life, according to Emma Banks, General Manager, Jumeirah Restaurant Group, which owns and operates The Noodle House brand.
“The Freedom Movement is the ‘straw that broke the camel’s back’, so to speak, and Jumeirah Restaurant Group is more committed than ever to being as free from single-use plastic as humanly possible across our entire brand portfolio, which starts with The Noodle House” says Banks. “Everyone has seen the sad and sickening images of plastic laden oceans on their social media feeds and the writing is on the wall when it comes to plastic – it’s important that everybody thinks about alternatives, and now.”
“We are all extremely passionate about tackling Dubai’s waste culture, and reducing single-use items such as plastic straws is our first step in the right direction,” she adds. “While we are kicking this off with The Noodle House, our mission right now is to ensure all plastic is out of our restaurants, with other brands set to follow suit shortly. This is just the start of our commitment to the environment, and we look forward to announcing an almost entirely plastic-free operation in the coming months.”
