Almost everybody living in Dubai must be aware with the robbery incident that happened in WAFI CITY, Dubai back in 2007 in which the thieves stole jewelry worth more than 20 million Dirhams. To capture that incident Danny Boyle, the British filmmaker behind cult classics such as the Oscar-winning ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘Trainspotting’, has signed on to direct a movie based on the infamous international jewel thieves dubbed the ‘Pink Panthers’.
Interviews with gang members were used as the basis of an 89 minute documentary, named ‘Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers’, which was directed by Sundance Film Festival award winning director Havana Marking.
Boyle, who also worked on the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic Games, said he was inspired to make his movie after seeing the documentary, which had its international premiere in New York on July 31 this summer.
Boyle told Hollywood trade newspaper that all the films he have made are the same film. I have to admit that. They’re all about a character, usually a bloke, who faces insurmountable odds and overcomes them.
Their 2007 heist, when the thieves crashed into the windows of a House of Graff store in Dubai’s Wafi Mall and stole millions of Dirhams worth of jewels, was caught on camera and the video became a popular YouTube video.
