Lausanne is built on three hills, not for no reason the town is known for the ladies with best legs. A city cycle along the lower part of town where the lake meets the promenade is perfect for a day of outdoor wellness. A little further along, the Lavaux – a UNESCO site of terraces offer splendid views and a nice serpentine-like ride past ancient grapevines.
Further down the lake in the town, Vevey, birthplace of milk chocolate and head quarters of the famous Nestle chocolate. The charming town offers a idyllic scenery for those who shy a way from the hustle and bustle of Lausanne. With its terraces along the promenade overlooking the lake and its harbour and the majestic Swiss and French Alps, this town has views so impressive you will struggle to ever forget.
Montreux is the calmer, classy town of the region – where leisurely walks along the lake are a given and history can be met at the Chillon castle – a little further along on the edge of the lake. Here along the lake, sailboats come and go to enjoy the beauty of the region from the crystal clear waters.
For families this part of Switzerland on the north side of Lake Geneva, only an hour away from the airport, offers plenty of outdoor activities and indoor leisure with the interactive Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the newly opened Aquatis, the largest freshwater Aquarium in Europe, and all the activities’ on the lake and the surrounding scenery. This June the annual Montreux Jazz Festival is back and offers a superb line up of artists from all over the world and in July and August Lausanne is the place for foodies with its famous ‘Lausanne a Table’ – where the whole city becomes one gastronomic scene.
