Travel videos are an excellent source of information about places that you are planning to visit. But rather than taking notes from them, why not save the video itself and bring it with you on your smartphone or tablet when you go on your trip.
If the travel videos are already in the form of video files or DVDs (that you can rip to video files) it would be easy to transfer them to any device. However because the majority of travel videos nowadays are online streaming videos, you need to know how to save them:
- ‘Video downloader’ services
The most frequently-used way to save travel videos that are online is to use video downloader services. Essentially these are websites where you can enter the URL of the video that you want to download, and it will process and give you a download link – letting you save it.
Although easy to use, the services do have limitations in terms of the maximum duration, file size, or video quality. However the main limitation is the fact that you won’t be able to save any videos that are from apps or other places where you can’t get the video URL, and not all services support all online streaming platforms.
- Browser extensions
Another popular option to save travel videos is by using browser extensions that will let you download the videos. Some are tied to video downloader services, but others work by detecting the video source and downloading from it directly.
If it detects the video source the extension won’t have limitations on the duration, file size, or video quality. However because it is browser-based you still won’t be able to save videos that are from apps, and it may not be able to find the source on certain platforms.
On top of that some browser extensions may be malicious, so you should take care when choosing one.
- Screen recorders
Arguably the most flexible and universal way to save travel videos is by using a screen recorder. It will let you capture the video directly from your screen and then save it as a video file.
Unlike the other options screen recorders have no limitations and can save videos from any source. The only caveat is you will need to wait as it is recorded while it plays on your screen.
If you do use this option it is important to find a user-friendly screen recorder that is easy to set up. For example you could use Movavi Screen Capture Studio for Mac, and it will even let you learn how to record audio on Mac instead of video.
Any of the options listed above will let you save travel videos for reference. Once you have saved the video, it should be easy enough to transfer it over to any mobile device so that it is easy to refer to it while you’re on your trip.
It may help to only save the relevant parts of some travel videos however, so that you don’t end up with very large files.
