Opera Gallery Dubai, part of the internationally renowned Opera Gallery network, is proud to present the first major solo exhibition of celebrated Korean artist Chae Sung-Pil from May 13th to May 27th 2015. “Wild Grasses, Sandy Dunes” reveals a series of new works from the artist’s studio that embody the artist’s singular philosophy of earth-palette paintings.
Chae Sung-Pil’s soil palette, collected from various trips around the world, is filtered and diluted with water before being mixed with glue, mud and India ink to create abstract textures on canvas reminiscent of the texture of the earth. The soil is specially prepared on mulberry paper before the artist applies the mixture onto canvas using a large brush or brooklets of water, allowing the soil to interact with the elements through slight tilts in the canvas. Similar to the effects of rain or wind on a patch of loose sand, the brooklets in Chae’s landscapes epitomize the organize diversity of movement inherent in nature.
A native of South Korea Chae Sung-Pil is a contemporary painter whose uses various types of soil as his paint. With each piece produced from soil collected in different locations, Wild Grasses, Sandy Dunes becomes an amalgamation of regions that showcases both the vastness and compactness of our planet, reflecting on the likeness of earth’s tones yet tinged with an unmistakable longing for home. Using soil and water – two of the five elements of nature – as his paint, Chae’s canvases alight with the rocky, grainy, harmonious textures of the earth.
Growing up in Jindo, the largest of South Korea’s islands, Chae’s earth palette was inspired by the his love of and fascination with the various textures and colours of soil that exist around the earth.
Currently residing in Paris, Sung-Pil’s semi-abstract works reveal the steppe of his homeland and the fact that everything animate is born from, and returns to, the earth.
“I love earth because it never changes”, says the artist, “even when everything else in this world does. Of the five elements everything began with, it is earth that is at the center. Water, plants, fire, iron exist around it.”
Chae Sung-Pil’s exhibition will be on display from May 13th to May 27th 2015 at Opera Gallery Dubai, Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC); Gate Village, Building #3, +971 4 323 0909.
