Döner & Gyros, a vibrant new eatery concept that offers the best of Berlin and Chicago street food is launching in the UAE. The internationally renowned cuisine, doner and gyros, will now be available in Döner & Gyros’ first two branches, located in Al Barsha Mall and Dubai Marina from 01 August 2014.
Launched by the Naseeb Group, the company took two concepts that were originally conceptualized by the Germans and Chicagoans and combined them through professional chefs to offer the best of sandwich delicacies under one roof in the UAE.
“Those who have travelled to Germany and Chicago and tasted a doner and a gyro, from these cities, would agree that it is well worth travelling to these destinations, just for a taste of Berlin and a bite of Chicago,” said, Darryl Poulton, Operations Manager, Döner & Gyros. “We wanted to bring that experience to the UAE and perfect the delicacy that has become famous street food in other parts of the world, for any time of the day.”
The doner story began in 1971, when Mehmet Aygu adapted the traditional Iskander-style kebab of NW Turkey to a more ‘Berliner’ taste, which today is perhaps the most historical and popular street food in Europe. Freshly baked sesame flat bread is dabbed directly onto roasting meat to soak up the flavorful juice and then generously filled with strips of meat sliced directly off a vertical rotisserie. It is then topped with a variety of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers with a choice of yogurt based signature sauces and a sash of spice.
The Titan of a sandwich, the gyro, which originated in Greece and arrived on the streets of Chicago on 1965, made George Apostolu, owner of the Parkview Restaurant, a famous man. Cones of gyro meat rotate on a vertical broiler until perfectly roasted. The tender flavorful meat is then sliced and folded into a freshly baked pita bread, topped with signature yogurt sauce and a variety of salad options.
Now, the doner and gyro have been brought together in the UAE to offer affordable, healthy and delicious everyday food and crave-able sandwiches to UAE residents. The interactive sandwich building experience makes for an experimental twist to every meal while ingredients have been carefully selected to meet the highest nutritional standards.
The street food favorites sourced expert advice from renowned Chef Michael Markellos, from Chicago, who perfected the gyro recipe, and Chef Gul Fahrettin, from Berlin, who created a doner recipe that nobody will be able to resist. Both chefs worked in harmony to create a holistic concept that complement each other and the taste buds of every sandwich lover.
“Our sandwiches and side orders are nutritionally healthier than ordinary fast food outlets as the highest ISO quality meat is used (imported) while fresh produce is sourced locally to enhance sustainability. We also use lean meat which automatically reduces the carbohydrate value in each meal,” added Darryl.
Döner & Gyros’ goal is to share the best street food concepts from Berlin and Chicago with as many people as possible hence more branches are scheduled to launch within the coming months. Customers can expect branches to open in popular locations across the UAE, including DIFC, Abu Dhabi and further afield in the Middle East and Russia.
Döner & Gyros operates both restaurant dining and a take-away service while freshly prepared doner and gyros can be delivered to neighborhoods around the UAE. The Al Barsha Mall branch operates daily from 9am – 2am (04-348 4333) while Dubai Marina, Marina Diamond Building 4 operates from 10am – 4am (04-441 2150) and an average meal costs AED 40 per person.
