Whether you’re looking to travel or stay near home – or a combination of the two – there are a host of incredible sports events to attend this year. Check out our top picks for Emirati sports fans in 2014, and book your tickets to ensure you don’t miss out!
ICC Twenty20 World Cup
The ICC World Twenty20 cricket tournament will this year take place in Bangladesh, between March 16th and April 6th. The men’s UAE team debut on Marxch 17th in a match against The Netherlands, and are also scheduled to play Ireland and Zimbabwe on March 19th and March 21st respectively.
Flydubai is offering direct flights from Dubai International to Dhaka, which is near to the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium; and Chittagong, close to the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Don’t forget to exchange your Dirham into Taka before jetting off – Travelex UAE offers great rates and allows you to pick up currency from the airport.
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
One of the biggest events on the motor racing calendar is the conclusion of the Formula 1 season, and this year, Abu Dhabi gets to play host. The high-octane Grand Prix weekend lies across November 21st to 23rd, and tickets will soon be available from the Yas Marina Circuit website.
This might just be the best year to attend a finale, since a recent rule change means that double drivers’ and constructors’ points will be awarded in the last Grand Prix. With up to 50 points up for grabs, racers’ overall standings are far more likely to be hanging in the balance.
Wimbledon Championships
The Wimbledon Grand Slam is set for June 23rd to July 6th, and although the 2014 ticket ballot has now closed, you can still secure seats on the centre court or a place on Murray’s Mound (Aorangi Terrace). The BBC has more information on how you can get resale tickets or tickets on the day.
Direct flights to London from Dubai International Airport and Abu Dhabi International Airport are available, and since the stadium is only ten miles from the capital, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to accommodation. Make sure you don’t miss attractions like the London Eye when visiting!
Dubai Marathon
The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon will take place on January 24th, so hurry and make plans if you want to attend. Racers will start in the shadow of the Burj Al Arab and follow the 42 km circular course back to Umm Suqeim Road.
Cheer on professionals, fundraisers and novice runners alike along the streets of Dubai, then enjoy live bands and other entertainment at the Marathon Village. If you’re visiting from afar, make a trip to the Dubai Shopping Festival, Burj Khalifa Experience and Wild Wadi Water Park part of your itinerary too.
